Overall Program

This year’s conference theme, Expanding Visions: Theological & Spiritual Perspectives in Practice, promises to be educational, thought-provoking and motivational. Conference participants will be given the opportunity to experience outstanding speakers with fresh and stimulating ideas, educational sessions and energetic discussions, musical performances, reconnecting with old friends and discovering new ones. Visiting Norfolk, Virginia, you, your spouse or partner and family will leave with an everlasting impression of this charming, waterfront city.

Conference Chaplain

Kenneth Nafziger Kenneth Nafziger, artistic director and conductor, is Professor of Music at Eastern Mennonite University. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Oregon, and was a post-doctoral conducting student with Helmuth Rilling in Stuttgart, Germany. At EMU his teaching responsibilities include the EMU Chamber Singers, courses in conducting, interdisciplinary humanities studies, the honors program, and world music. Mr. Nafziger is also music director and conductor of the Lake Chelan Bach Fest in Chelan, Wash., and the chamber choir Voce in Reston, Va. He is also an active musician in Cuba, having visited the island eleven times where he has worked with many of Cuba’s premier orchestral and choral ensembles.

Active in very wide musical circles, Mr. Nafziger was a founding member of the Board of Directors for the Milestone Learning Center, Highlands, N.C., and an honorary member of the Board of Directors for Melodious Accord, Inc., New York. He is the co-author with Marlene Kropf of the book, Singing: a Mennonite Voice, and was music editor of Hymnal: A Worship Book [1992], and editor of its Accompaniment Handbook [1993].

African-American Working Group

The African American Working Group, open to everyone, is designed to present effective and creative models for doing pastoral counseling with African American persons. Actual case material and current operating models will be used, and practical issues of financial support explored by consultation presenters.

Samaritan Institute

Workshops of particular interest to Samaritan Institute Members are being offered. Members of the Institute will be eligible to receive registration at AAPC membership prices.

Definition of Terms and Tracks

  • Introductory:   An overview and/or introduction to a topic in the area.
  • Moderate:   Assumes basic familiarity with a topic and some experience in the area.
  • Advanced:   Assumes a working knowledge of a topic and/or substantive experience.
  • Workshop:   Recognized leader presents materials followed by participatory learning.
  • Panel:   Several leaders share experiences, responses.
  • Working Group:   Colleagues who share leadership and focus on specific subject over several years.

Educational sessions will be offered in four tracks that are identified in session descriptions:

  • Track I:   Congregational/Community Integrating Models of Pastoral Counseling
  • Track II:   Centers and Training Administration/Supervision
  • Track III:   Clinical Models and Clinical Practice
  • Track IV:   Parish Track
