A Continuing Community Outreach Program for Partners in Healing -- Core Competency TrainingSince 2001, several organizations including the Johnson Institute, National Association for Children of Alcoholics, Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration, American Association of Pastoral Counselors, as well as addiction specialists, religious leaders and other health care providers, have been collaborating and participating in programs to train faith community leaders and mental health providers to assist the millions of people -- families, children and individuals – affected by alcohol and drug abuse. As a result of this training, pastoral counselors and other mental health providers will be able to provide the necessary knowledge and skills to religious leaders in the areas of assessment, referral, pastoral care and community education that will assist those in need to access appropriate levels of care and treatment. Results of the overall program have already resulted in a printed monograph provided by SAMHSA; the Clergy Training Project that explores developing and implementing seminary training on alcohol and drug addition and its effects on the family; and the following article by AAPC and NACOA. It is projected that this multi-tiered project will continue to provide training for faith community leaders and mental health providers around the country for many years.
